The opening ceremony of the Second Warwick University-Shanghai Jiao Tong University English Language Teachers Professional Development Program was held in Dali, Yunnan province on July 2.

Ninety college teachers from Yunnan, Guizhou, Ningxia, Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Sichuan, Hainan and Henan provinces, which are in middle and western China, benefit from a program designed by the University of Warwick and Shanghai Jiao Tong University .

Five teachers from Applied Linguistics at the University of Warwick, along with two teachers from the School of Foreign Languages at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, will be delivering courses to help to advance the 90 participants’ English language skills and equip them with the knowledge and expertise to improve English language pedagogy.

This project was made possible by a generous donation from Mr. Sing Cheong Liu, a Chinese philanthropist from Hong Kong, China, who is committed to supporting the development of education in China. A key aspect of his philanthropy is to provide underprivileged children with greater opportunities to access education and employment. English language training is an important part of this mission.
