On the afternoon of March 17th, the faculty meeting of the School of Foreign Languages (hereafter referred to as SFL) was held, with the leaders of SFL and all the faculty and staff attending the event. The meeting was presided over by Xing Lianqing, Vice Secretary of CPC SFL Committee.

Ding Jian, Secretary of CPC SFL Committee, made work arrangements around the theme of "reform before inspection" and "the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Party". He stressed that inspection is an important system stipulated in the Party Constitution, an important measure to strengthen Party building, an important means to comprehensively govern the Party with strict discipline, and an important form to strengthen intraparty supervision. It is of great significance to comprehensively govern the Party with strict discipline and create a clean and upright atmosphere for development. According to the requirements of the higher authorities, SFL will comprehensively start the work of self-examination and self-correction, and hope that all the staff will attach great importance to it and actively cooperate with it. The year 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and a year of special importance in China's modernization drive. The year marks the successful conclusion of the 13th Five-Year Plan, the beginning of the 14th Five-Year Plan, and the official start of a new journey to build a modern socialist country in all respects. Ding Jian emphasized that all the faculty and students should take the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Party as an opportunity to deeply study and implement Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and earnestly carry out the study and education of Party history. All the teachers, students and party members of SFL should study party history to gain understanding, boost confidence, advocate virtues, and drive action, focusing on doing practical work and opening new avenues. Centering on the renewed SJTU policy of “Comprehensiveness, Innovation and Internationalization” put forward at the eleventh SJTU Party Congress, they should strive to build a first-class foreign language discipline and a harmonious SFL. At the meeting, Ding Jian also reported the adjustment of SFL leadership’s division of labor.

Chang Hui, Executive Associate Dean of SFL, introduced the key points of this year's work, and laid out the work plan from the aspect of comprehensive work, talent training, scientific research, teaching staff construction and social services. In 2021, SFL will endeavor to link with national and university strategies, further consolidate disciplinary characteristics, incubate landmark achievements, build a three-dimensional discipline system, and improve SFL’s management and service. Furthermore, SFL aims to strengthen teaching quality construction, do a good job in constructing first-class majors and courses, applying for projects and awards, increasing investment in research, strengthening the development of journals, and ensuring the publication of high-level research papers. With the policy of “recruiting and cultivating simultaneously”, SFL will also strengthen teaching staff construction, especially teachers with tenures. At the same time, SFL will continue to promote the cooperation with enterprises and public institutions, expand social influences, and do a good job in social services.

Xing Lianqing introduced SFL’s recent recruits. In her final talk, she stressed that in the context of the normalization of epidemic prevention and control, she expected all the faculty and staff to work together, focus on the central work, do their jobs properly, and effectively shoulder the responsibility of "imparting knowledge and educating people, upholding virtues and cultivating the young ".

In 2020, the teachers and students of SFL worked together to meet the challenge of COVID-19, ensuring the successful completion of teaching, research, social services and other tasks, reflecting the responsibility and contribution of SFLers. In 2021, all the teachers and students will further fully implement the spirit of the 11th Party Congress of SJTU, and strive to build a first-class foreign language discipline and a harmonious SFL, to welcome the 100th anniversary of the founding of CPC with outstanding achievements.
