The School of Foreign Languages welcomed 137 undergraduate, master and doctoral students from August 24th to September 15th. During the orientation, SFL took multiple measures and enriched forms, with a new look and considerate help, escorted students to start their new journey.

 

The opening ceremony welcomes freshmen into the school

The 2021 School of Foreign Languages opening ceremony was held in the multifunctional hall of Yang Yongman Building on the afternoon of September 15. Ding Jian, Secretary of CPC SFL Committee, Chang Hui, executive associate dean of SFL, Zhang Hongmei, Associate Dean of SFL, Peng Qinglong, Associate Dean of SFL, and Tao Qing, Associate Dean of SFL, heads of English department, Japanese department, German department, and related teachers attended the event. 2021 freshmen participated. The ceremony was presided over by Zhu Yifan, Vice Secretary of CPC SFL Committee.

The opening ceremony kicked off with the solemn national anthem.
Ding Jian delivered a welcome speech on behalf of the school. He extended a warm welcome to the freshmen, introducing its faculty and development history, and recalling the opening ceremony of more than 30 years ago as an alumni. He encouraged the freshmen present to cherish the excellent learning environment, to merge the trickle of personal growth into the rivers and seas of national development and to realize the meaning of life on an infinitely broad stage.

  Chang Hui briefly introduced the school’s development history and its disciplines, focusing on its work and achievements in talents cultivation, teacher workforce development, scientific research and innovation, and social services during the past five years. Finally, he urged the freshmen to set up lofty ambitions, keep their feet on the ground, and grow and flourish in the fertile soil of School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

 

Lv Qianxi, a teacher representative from the Department of Translation and Interpretation, guided the students to accumulate bit by bit in their studies, master the ability of deep learning, and calmly and firmly pursue the direction of the heart.

Gao Zhuorui, a 2019 undergraduate of the English Department, and Zhang Peng, a 2020 graduate of the Foreign languages and Literature major, spoke as representatives of senior students. They elaborated on the topic from the perspectives of exploring the unknown, combining learning with use, and accepting oneself.On behalf of the freshman, Xu Yan from the Department of Japanese talked about her vision and outlook for university life, that is, four years of innocence, contemplation, and finding their own ways and circles. Drawing upon her undergraduate study experience at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Li Zhenni, a graduate student representative from the Department of Translation and Interpretation, encouraged everyone to work hard, maintain steady growth, advance in multiple dimensions, strive for excellence to build a better self, and write a brilliant chapter.

Guide carefully to help young eagles spread their wings

At the introduction meeting of the graduate program, Peng Qinglong took "Quantum Thinking and Literature Research" as the theme and elaborated on quantum engineering, artificial intelligence and genetic engineering, putting forward the innovative thinking paradigm of "technology and humanities at the same time". After that, the teachers of each discipline introduced to the freshmen the rules and requirements of cultivation plan, academic research, thesis publication and degree application in detail, and patiently answered the related questions to help them make a long-term plan for their academic growth.

At the meeting of the undergraduate discipline navigation, the department heads introduced the discipline overview to the students, so that they can have a deeper understanding and thinking about the development of the training plan and the future development of the discipline.

 

Work together to ensure the registration of new students

SFL made detailed preparations in advance, with all the political and ideological teachers, head teachers and counselors on duty, and a large number of students and volunteers recruited and trained in advance, so as to do a good job in welcoming the students.

SFL also prepared a warm gift package for freshmen, including exclusive school shirts, canvas bags, notebooks, letter paper envelopes, disposable hand sanitizer, etc.

On the day of freshman’s arrival and registration, head teachers organized the first class meeting to introduce in detail the arrangements of the school’s orientation work and the precautions of campus study and life, so that students can integrate into the SFL family more quickly.

The School of Foreign Languages will soon carry out a series of activities, such as Dean's First Class, lectures on college students' psychological health, library training lectures, and visits to Qian Xuesen Library and Museum to help freshmen to adapt to college life faster and better.
