The 7th Seminar on Phonetics and Brain Neural Mechanisms Held in SFL, SJTU

From June 30 to July 2, the 7th Advanced Seminar on Phonetics and Brain Neural Mechanisms was successfully held, which was sponsored by the Speech-Language-Hearing Center, School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Li Chunbo, Deputy Dean of the Mental Health Center Affiliated to School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Deputy Dean of the Institute of Behavioral Sciences; Fan Qing, chief physician of the Mental Health Center Affiliated to School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University; Ding Hongwei, Professor of School of Foreign Languages; Lin Yi, doctor of School of Foreign Languages; Wu Mengyue, Associate Researcher of School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering; Jiang Xiaoming, Professor of Institute of Linguistics, Shanghai International Studies University; Zhang Yang, Professor of Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences and Masonic Institute for the Developing Brain, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, USA; Liu Chang, Professor of Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, University of Texas at Austin, USA; Qin Pengmin, Professor of School of Psychology, South China Normal University; Chen Fei, Professor of School of Foreign Languages, Hunan University; Dr. Guan Jingjing, Senior Director of the Innovation Center of Sonova in China, and other authoritative experts made keynote speeches to discuss the latest topics and development trends in the field of speech science research, such as speech and brain neural mechanism research, speech and hearing research for special populations, speech recognition and hearing aid technology, cross-lingual speech perception and production, and speech language acquisition research. The seminar also invited experts in electroencephalography and near-infrared equipment to conduct relevant technical training. Nearly 100 scholars and students from home and abroad attended this seminar in-person or online.

The seminar was officially opened on the morning of June 30. Chang Hui, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, delivered a speech. He pointed out that language health research is of great significance to social development and people's well-being. The School of Foreign Languages regarded language research related to health as an essential part of the school's development plan and has laid a solid foundation in laboratory construction, talent cultivation, social services, and faculty development. The support will be enhanced in the future to provide a better guarantee for the development of language health research.

Afterward, Professor Zhang Yang, Professor Ding Hongwei, Dr. Guan Jingjing, Associate Researcher Wu Mengyue, and Dr. Lin Yi delivered keynote speeches respectively. Professor Zhang gave a keynote speech entitled "Exploring Brain Plasticity in Enhancing L2 Speech Training". Professor Ding Hongwei gave a keynote speech entitled "Interdisciplinary Research and Domestic and Foreign Cooperation on Phonetics in SFL, SJTU ". Dr. Guan Jingjing gave a keynote lecture entitled " Characteristics of Speech Perception and Intervention for People with Severe Hearing Loss". Associate researcher Wu Mengyue gave a keynote speech entitled "Mental Illness Detection Based on Voice Intelligence Models". Dr. Lin Yi gave a keynote presentation entitled "Prosodic Dominance Effects in Emotional Speech Perception: Evidence from Cross-Channel Effects".

Then, technical experts provided training sessions on EEG technology and introduced specific operation and related research of EEG experiments in detail. 

On July 1, Ding Jian, Secretary of the Party Committee of SFL, SJTU, delivered a speech. Ding Jian pointed out that the school will continue to explore the construction of new liberal arts and the cross-discipline development of liberal arts, combining science, medicine and engineering. The school will take serving the national strategy and social needs as its own responsibility, and will vigorously promote the cross-discipline cooperation, focusing on language and health, and will establish a foreign language discipline with the characteristics of SJTU.

Subsequently, Chief Physician Fan Qing, Deputy Dean Li Chunbo, Professor Chen Fei, and Professor Liu Chang delivered keynote speeches respectively. Chief physician Fan Qing gave a keynote report entitled "A Follow-up Study on Facial Expression Recognition in Different Stages of Depression". Chief Physician Li Chunbo gave a keynote speech entitled "Research on Schizophrenia and Language Problems". Professor Fei Chen delivered a keynote speech entitled "Research on Speech Rehabilitation Training for Mandarin-Speaking Autistic Children: Current Situation and Future Direction". Professor Chang Liu gave a presentation entitled "Auditory Perception: The Effect of Language Context, Hearing Impairment, and Aging"

In the evening, technical experts brought a technical training, introducing NIR experimental techniques and relevant studies.

On July 2, Professor Qin Pengmin and Professor Jiang Xiaoming delivered keynote speeches respectively. Professor Qin Pengmin gave a keynote speech entitled "Three-Level Processing Structure of Self". Professor Jiang Xiaoming gave a keynote speech entitled "Cognitive Neural and Computational Mechanism of Voice Information Encoding and Decoding".

Afterward, two attendees made remarks. They believed that this seminar combined liberal arts, science, medicine, and engineering, and fully reflected the concept of new liberal arts construction. By attending this seminar, students can systematically understand the frontiers of research in speech science.

After that, Tao Qing, the Vice Dean of SFL, SJTU, presented the certificates to the attendees and delivered a speech at the closing ceremony.

The 7th Seminar on Phonetics and Brain Neural Mechanisms ended successfully, and all attendees gained a lot.
