Volunteers from SFL at the Final of China International College Students' Innovatioin Competition 2024

SFL volunteers provided simultaneous interpretation services during the final of the China International College Students' Innovation Competition 2024 . 

The final of the China International College Students' Innovation Competition 2024 took place at the Minhang Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University from Oct 12th to Oct. 15th. The event aims to inspire students from various disciplines to innovate and effectively promote indepentdent talent development and research innovation. Co-hosted by 12 departments of the Ministry of Education and Shanghai Municipal People's Government and co-organized by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Minhang District Municipal People's Government, the competition has attracted 5.14 million projects from 5406 colleges in 513 countries and regions since its launch in May. A total of 20.836 million students have signed up to compete. 

In order to serve the event, the School of Foreign Languages launched the recruitment of cointerpreters in mid-August. After a strict selection process, a volunteer team of teachers and students led by Tao Qing, vice dean of the School of Foreign Languages and director of the Translation Department, was formed, and 35 undergraduates and doctoral students from English, Japanese and German majors participated in the whole process.​

 

 

In the final, Tao Qing and Dai Rongrong acted as simultaneous interpreters, providing on-site interpretation with a very high professional level, and winning constant praise from experts, teachers, students, and audiences. During the competition, the volunteer team showed a high degree of professionalism and responsibility. Facing competitors from all over the world with their different foreign language pronunciation and expression, limited time and arduous translation tasks, the volunteers worked around the clock, make thorough preparation to ensure the quality of every sentence, striving to convey the information to the judges and contestants accurately, and providing the contestants with timely and professional services.

 

 

Fang Yan from the SFL said that as a translation major, she felt deeply honored to play her professional expertise in this international competition, break through the comfort zone, and continue to learn and grow in practice, and contribute her strength to promoting global innovation and development and international youth unity and cooperation!

A total of more than 200 student volunteers from the School of Foreign Languages participated in  organizing and preparing for the competition. They served in multiple frontline foreign-related positions, including simultaneous interpretation, international team liaison group, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan team liaison group, and mobile team, providing strong support for the smooth progress of the competition.
